"As my term as Mayor has concluded, I have reflected on what I have learned about Salina, its people, and the community. We are a city working together and moving forward. With uncertainty surrounding the economy and the inflation pressures of this past year, we have continued in a positive direction. I am filled with gratitude serving as the Mayor of the City of Salina has been a great honor.
The past year began with the commission meeting schedule transitioning to two meetings per month. I feel we have worked through this change and have kept the meetings moving and efficient. Yes, we have had several very long meetings, but we've also had a couple of short ones as well.
As I have taken part in groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings this past year, I am convinced that there is more development happening in Salina now than any time in recent history. People and corporations are continuing to invest in our community. As we move into the new year, I expect more progress and good things to come. Over the past year, we have faced some challenges as a city and have also been able to celebrate milestones. We have worked toward making our community stronger and a great place to call home.
One year ago, when I assumed the Mayorship, I predicted that 2024 could be the year that Salina would surpass 50,000 in population. While I don't know how we get an accurate count, I believe we are knocking on the door of 50,000 people in our city. Several housing projects which were put into place are coming together, as you can see with the apartments being constructed on West Magnolia, and other housing projects throughout the city.
We have been able to stabilize and grow city employment while equipping employees with the tools and equipment needed to safely and efficiently perform their duties. Preparations are being made to break ground on the first new fire station to be constructed since the 1980's. Our fire stations will soon be equipped with 7 new fire trucks to serve and protect our city for years to come.
None of this would have been possible without the dedicated efforts of many. I would like to thank my fellow commissioners. I believe we have worked together toward one goal: To make the best decisions for Salina while being mindful of staying on track, and within budgets. Special thanks to Commissioner Davis and Commissioner Hoppock for being great members in preparing me for this role. Thank you to the dedicated city staff for their support and direction. Without their efforts and guidance, we as commissioners would have a difficult time grasping all the information that comes before us, I would also like to thank community leaders and partners who continue investing to make Salina a better place to live and raise a family.
As we move forward let us remember that the heart of the city lies in the people who call Salina home. Together we can seize opportunities and keep building a brighter future for generations to come.
I would like to give thanks to God for giving me the ability and opportunity to serve as your Mayor. Special thanks to my wife Donna for being patient and supportive. And lastly, I would like to thank the citizens of Salina who have shown their support and appreciation to me for serving the City of Salina."
