Coffee With a Cop
Building Trust with the Community One Cup at a Time

In March 2011 the Hawthorne, California, Police Department Community Affairs Unit hosted their first Coffee with a Cop event. Police and community members came together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee. These events are now being held nationwide. Chief Nelson has had nine events since his appointment as Chief in December 2013.

“Over the years, police organizations have slowly evolved into “drive-by policing” which is basically officers driving by those they serve and waving.
