Seat belt use is required by the driver and those passengers occupying the front seat of any motor vehicle that is equipped with passenger restraints.
Child Restraint Laws
Kansas law requires seat belts, booster seats, and/or child seats for children riding in motor vehicles. The requirements are:
- Children under 1 year of age and 20 pounds must ride in a rear-facing child seat.
- Children ages 1- 3 must be properly restrained in a forward-facing child seat.
- Children ages 4- 7 are required to ride in a booster seat unless: the child weighs more than 80 pounds, the child is taller than 4' feet 9," or
only a lap belt is available. Children who meet the above height and weight criteria must be protected by a safety belt.
- Children ages 8-13 must be protected by a safety belt.
