ORDINANCE NUMBER 24-11209
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SALINA CODE CHAPTER 8, ARTICLE I, DIVISION 1 BY ADDING SECTION 8-1-1-903.2.9 AND SALINA CODE CHAPTER 14, ARTICLE III, DIVISION 1 BY ADDING SECTION 14-3-1-903.2.9 TO SIMULTANEOUSLY CREATE AN EXCEPTION FOR SELF-SERVICE STORAGE OCCUPANCIES TO CONDITION 5 IN BOTH SECTION 903.2.9 OF THE 2012 INTERNATIONAL BUILDING CODE (IBC) AND SECTION 903.2.9 OF THE 2012 INTERNATIONAL FIRE CODE (IFC).
BE IT ORDAINED by the Governing Body of Salina, Kansas:
Section 1. This ordinance is intended to amend the Salina Code to simultaneously create an exception for self-service storage occupancies to Condition 5 in both Section 903.2.9 of the 2012 International Building Code (IBC) and Section 903.2.9 of the 2012 International Fire Code (IFC).
Section 2. That the Salina Code is hereby amended by adding a section to be numbered 8-1-1-903.2.9, which section reads as follows:
Sec. 8-1-1-903.2.9 – Amendment to Section 903.2.9 of the IBC.
Section 903.2.9 of the IBC is amended to read as follows:
903.2.9 Group S-1. An automatic sprinkler system shall be provided throughout all buildings containing a Group S-1 occupancy where one of the following conditions exists:
1. A Group S-1 fire area exceeds 12,000 square feet (1115 m2).
2. A Group S-1 fire area is located more than three stories above grade plane.
3. The combined area of all Group S-1 fire areas on all floors, including any mezzanines, exceeds 24,000 square feet (2,230 m2).
4. A Group S-1 fire area used for the storage of commercial trucks or buses where the fire area exceeds 5,000 square feet (464 m2).
5. A Group S-1 occupancy used for the storage of upholstered furniture or mattresses exceeds 2,500 square feet (232 m2).
Exception to 5: Group S-1 occupancies that are self-service storage units shall meet the requirements of Salina Municipal Code Section 8-1-1-903.2.9.3.
Section 3. That the Salina Code is hereby amended by adding a section to be numbered 14-3-1-903.2.9, which section reads as follows:
Sec. 14-3-1-903.2.9 – Amendment to Section 903.2.9 of the IFC.
Section 903.2.9 of the IFC is amended to read as follows:
903.2.9 Group S-1. An automatic sprinkler system shall be provided throughout all buildings containing a Group S-1 occupancy where one of the following conditions exists:

Section 4. Publication. The City Clerk shall cause this ordinance, as soon as practicable after it has been passed and signed, to be published on the City’s website as the designated official city newspaper.
Section 5. Effective date. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its publication.
