Fair Housing Month Recognized Locally With a Proclamation and Seminar

In celebration of National Fair Housing Month, local, state and federal organizations are informing citizens about housing laws, issuing proclamations to promote the importance of fair housing, and holding seminars to educate tenants, landlords, property managers, lenders, social workers, service providers and other interested parties about their rights and responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act. The landmark civil rights legislation, which passed in 1968, makes it illegal to discriminate in the sale or rental of housing based on race, color, sex, religion, national origin, familial status or disability.

At the national level, Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has rolled out a media campaign with the theme “Shared Opportunity in Every Community.” At the local level, Mayor Jon Blanchard issued a proclamation at the April 4 City Commission meeting, and the City of Salina Community Relations Department will host their Annual Fair Housing Seminar on Friday, April 22 from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Webster Conference Center, 2601 N. Ohio St. There is a $15 registration fee, which covers the cost of materials and lunch.

Following are the seminar topics and presenters: the Kansas Residential Landlord and Tenant Act and the Fair Housing Act, presented by Teresa Baker, Rental Housing Program Supervisor at Housing and Credit Counseling, Inc.; Property Maintenance Codes, presented by Gary Hobbie, Director of the City of Salina, Community and Development Services Department; Bed Bugs and More, presented by Jason Graves, Horticulture Agent at the Salina K-State Research and Extension Office.

For more information about the seminar or your rights as a landlord or tenant, call (785) 309-5745 or visit To register for the seminar, individuals should mail or deliver a check or money order no later than April 15 to the City of Salina Community Relations Department, located at 300 W. Ash St., Room 101, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
