Automated trash collection starting July 19th!

A new automated trash collection system is coming soon. Every City of Salina sanitation customer will receive a new trash cart for free, including our alley customers. If your existing cart is green, your new cart will provide six (6) more gallons of disposal space! The carts are designed to fit the new specialty side-loader trucks that use an automated arm controlled by the driver to lift and empty waste from the cart. These carts are also compatible with the City of Salina’s current trucks for our alley customers. While this change in collection method is not new (automated trash collection has been used in the U.S. since the 1970s), it will improve employee and public safety, reduce employee injuries and keep monthly service fees low by improving our collection efficiency.

Please see the Automated Trash Collection FAQ for more information and watch your mail for a postcard to help you select the number of trash carts for the July 19th launch. Please be sure to review it and follow the instructions to make a selection that best fits your needs.

Sanitation provides residential refuse and yard waste collection for over 15,000 households weekly, collecting about 17,000 tons of waste annually. Staff consists of one superintendent, one supervisor, 19 full-time employees and multiple temporary seasonal employees as needed throughout the year.

There is no sanitation collection on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day; therefore, collection will be delayed by one day, beginning on the holiday. For example, if the holiday is on Wednesday, Wednesday's collection will take place on Thursday, Thursday's on Friday, and Friday's on Saturday. For all other holidays, the collection schedule remains unchanged.
