Household Hazardous Waste Facility

The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility inspects, packages, and processes residential waste for disposal or reuse. Customers may drop off common hazardous materials and select useable products from the reuse center at no additional charge.

Many products used in our homes contain the same ingredients as industrial waste, yet are exempt from disposal regulations. Leftover products or those unused for over a year are unlikely ever to be used, yet the risk of spills or accidental poisoning of children or pets increases the longer the product remains in the home. The HHW facility provides a means for citizens to drop off these hazardous products at no charge.

Disposal Guidelines:

  1. The HHW facility only accepts residential materials.
  2. The HHW facility will accept waste from Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CESQGs), including schools, government agencies, and non-profit organizations from Saline County. The same disposal guidelines that apply to households also apply to these agencies. Additionally, a signed Certificate of Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator Status is required. Schools, government agencies, and non-profit organizations are responsible for understanding hazardous waste regulations and determining their generator status. For assistance in identifying your generator status, please contact the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Bureau of Waste Management.
  3. Small businesses may contact K-State's Small Business Environmental Assistance Program (SBEAP) at (800) 578-8898 or sbeap@ksu.edu for assistance with disposal options.
  4. There is a weekly disposal limit of 50 pounds solids or 5 gallons liquids per household.
  5. Do not combine materials. Some items are not compatible with each other and produce dangerous fumes, and other items when combined may not be recyclable.
  6. Pack wastes in sturdy containers, such as a tub or box, for transportation. Avoid plastic garbage bags, unless used to line a tub or box.
  7. Products should be accurately and legibly labeled and lids tightly secured.
  8. Empty containers and solidified latex paint may be disposed of with your household trash with lids removed.
  9. Wrap leaking containers in a clean plastic bag or pack them in a container with an absorbent material such as cat litter.
  10. Transport materials in the trunk of your automobile or truck bed.
