Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill

The Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill provides waste disposal in accordance with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). Staff consists of one superintendent, one supervisor, seven full-time and two part-time employees. The landfill occupies 656 acres, 289.69 of which are permitted by the KDHE for waste disposal. The landfill receives approximately 85,000 tons of refuse per year and has a life expectancy of about 120-140 years.

Disposal fees are based on the type and weight of materials brought to the landfill. The 2023 minimum disposal fee at the landfill is $11.00 per vehicle for loads up to 500 lbs. Loads of 500 lbs. or more will be $44.00 per ton. There are separate fees for other materials such as tires, dirt, rock, concrete, asbestos, contaminated soil, etc. Please call for specific rates not listed.

Yard Waste

The Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill operates a yard waste disposal site for Saline County residents to bring their yard waste free of charge. In 2023 commercial haulers of yard waste will pay 50% of the tipping fee, or $22.00 per ton. Residential and commercial customers with loads of yard waste mixed with refuse will pay $44.00 per ton.

  • Acceptable materials: brush, logs and stumps
  • Unacceptable materials: sod, dirt, rock, animal waste, lumber, food waste, refuse, grass and leaves

Waste Tires

When bringing tires to the Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill, please separate them from regular waste. The tires will be stored on-site and collected by a recycler.

Scrap Metal

Scrap metal (washers, dryers, hot water heaters, etc.) is collected for recycling at the landfill. Scrap metal must be separated from regular waste.

Customers must provide Freon removal certification for items such as refrigerators, freezers, A/C units, dehumidifiers, etc. There are numerous local businesses that remove Freon.
