The Internal Affairs Lieutenant coordinates the Chaplain program. Chaplains are members of Salina's clergy who graciously donate their time and skills to help solve community problems, which are better addressed by trained counselors and mediators, than law enforcement. Chaplains are available to assist law enforcement 24 hours a day. They are particularly helpful in assisting with alcohol related problems, death notices, emotionally disturbed persons, suicide attempts, and in providing comfort to victims of crimes. In addition to on-scene assistance, the duty chaplain is usually able to provide follow-up care and assistance, as needed, through various churches, community organizations or social service agencies, thus relieving officers of these responsibilities.
