Fire Department

Firefighter/Paramedic

Parks & Recreation Department

Park & Facility Maintenance Worker

(Intermittent Part-Time Long-Term)
Application deadline: Until filled-Parks & Recreation/Parks-Duties: Prepares & maintains parks, cemetery, buildings, medians, & other public facilities; performs manual labor in the care, minor construction & maintenance of facilities & outdoor spaces; provides custodial services, including cleaning & repairing floors, restrooms, & removal of trash; maintains park grounds including seeding, mowing, watering, aerification, top dressing, planting flowers, weed removal, painting, fence repair, dirt work & related duties; maintains lawns, shrubbery, & trees including planting, watering, trimming, mowing, edging, fertilizing, aerification, top dressing & weed & pest control; operates trucks, mowers, & other light equipment; services & performs minor repairs to equipment; performs routine maintenance & equipment safety inspection; applies practices relating to safe equipment operation & maintenance. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Experience Preferred: One (1) year work experience in general building & facility maintenance and/or landscape maintenance; grounds maintenance & equipment operation experience desired, minor construction, maintenance work, mowing, or tree care; ability to perform work using equipment & tools utilized in parks & facilities maintenance, landscape maintenance, & repair work. Equipment: Back hoes, chippers, dump trucks, man-lifts, medium sized loaders, post hole digger, precision mowers, rototiller, seeders & top dressers; tractors & attachments, utility vehicles, vehicles. Hand Tools: Chain saws, blowers, power tools, hedge trimmers, sprayers, edgers. Requirements: Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license. Work Type: Heavy, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; extensive amount of walking required; operates vehicles, equipment & tools requiring moderate ability; frequent exposure to chemicals, fertilizers, equipment, vehicles, sharp objects & height; frequent exposure to dust; occasional exposure to fumes & odors. Dates of employment: April 1 - Oct 31. Hours: Monday-Friday (40 hours); may include weekend shifts for snow/debris removal due to extreme weather events. Pay: $8.25 -13.00/hr.

Police Department

Police Officer

Application deadline: Until filled-Police Department-Duties: Protecting, serving, & working with Salina’s diverse citizenry & enforcing the law while protecting the constitutional rights of all. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Qualifications include: United States citizen; twenty-one (21) years of age at time of appointment; no felony convictions, domestic violence related conviction, or other serious misdemeanor convictions; good physical condition; eyesight: 20/100 correctable to 20/20, no upper acuity limit with contact lenses; ability to obtain Kansas Police Officer certification within one year of appointment. Selection process includes: Written test, three assessment interviews, psychological evaluation, computer voice stress analysis examination, thorough background check, physical examination, & drug screen. 911 Dispatcher

Application deadline: Until filled-Police Department-Duties: Responsible for dispatching all police, sheriff, fire, & ambulance operations in the city & county; operates a two-way communications system; monitors a computerized emergency system; types a variety of data into a computerized database. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Experience: In-service training program; typing speed 40 WPM minimum. Requirements: Must be minimum twenty-one (21) years of age; must live within 40 minutes response time; must successfully complete in-service training program in communications related curriculum; must pass selection process that includes assessment interviews, psychological evaluation, computer voice stress analyzer examination, & thorough background checks. Hours: Twelve hour shifts from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. & 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. with every other weekend off. Starting pay: $15.73/hr. Public Works Department

Sanitation Worker/Driver

Application deadline: Until filled-Public Works/Sanitation-Duties: Performs heavy manual labor in the collection of refuse and/or recycling materials; operates medium equipment & heavy duty trucks. Education: Eighth grade graduate. Experience: One year sanitation work or experience with small trucks & light equipment in construction, maintenance, or related activities; must be able to work outside in all weather conditions; heavy manual labor & outside work experience desired. Requirements: Must possess valid Kansas Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake endorsement; must be able to perform heavy manual labor & run designated routes; must be eighteen (18) years of age or older. Street Maintenance Worker

Traffic Control Worker (Temporary/Seasonal)

Utilities Department

GIS/Utility Technician

Application deadline: TH 03/28/2019-Utilities–Duties: Performs technical work in the maintenance & updating of GIS mapping & as-built utility maps; prepares routine drawings & maps; maintains water & sewer system models; performs data collection, data entry, maintenance & updating of GIS mapping; assists with survey & design of utility projects; locates water & wastewater pipelines in the field; assists plumbers & others in researching sewer/water files/records. Education: Technical school graduate. Experience: Two years of experience in drafting (Auto Cad preferred); familiarity with Utilities design & Utilities system modeling preferred. Must have knowledge of surveying, mathematics, & land records; knowledge & understanding of GIS hardware & software operations; understanding of personal computers, plotters, printers & associated hardware & software. Utility Worker I

Application deadline: Until filled-Utilities-Duties: Performs semi-skilled & skilled labor in the maintenance & operation of a water distribution & transmission system/wastewater collection system; performs minor electrical & mechanical maintenance; maintains wastewater pumps, motors & controls; installs, repairs, cleans, taps, fits & inspects wastewater/water pipelines; installs & repairs wastewater/water valves, manholes, & fire hydrants; installs & repairs chemical feed pumps & piping; performs custodial work such as cleaning, painting, lawn mowing & snow removal. Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. Experience: Two years maintenance of mechanical & electrical equipment, or related work preferred.
