Background

In June 2004, the City of Salina launched a Curbside Recycling Pilot Program. The goal of this yearlong program was to gain a clear picture of what resources were necessary to deliver a curbside recycling service to Salina and what fee must be charged to cover the expense. The knowledge gained from the Pilot Program was presented to the City Commission in March 2005 and helped guide their decision to add curbside recycling as a City service.

There were approximately 954 households serviced throughout the city. Surveys were conducted in December 2004 with these participants to gain insight into their experience with the program. The survey revealed that a majority of participants, 79%, are either very or extremely satisfied with the service.

The recycle truck pictured above uses a curbsort collection method and services most households on their regular refuse collection day. All material collected is taken to Images Recycling Center, 108 S. Fourth St., where it is packaged and transported to various companies that reuse the material.

In June 2006, the City Sanitation service signed up its 900th customer. From that point on, additional persons are being placed on a waiting list for future openings.

The Salina City Commission has authorized that this service be continued for at least another year (June 2007). During this time staff will continue to monitor the new service and consider other financing methods.
