SALINA COMMUNITY PROFILE
DEMOGRAPHICS & STATISTICS

What is Demography?

Demography is the study of human populations. Demographers collect, present and analyze data relating to basic life-cycle events: birth, marriage, divorce, household and family formation, employment, aging, migration and death. The discipline emphasizes investigation of population events, measurement of these events and the study of their causes and consequences.

The field of demography is also concerned with social and economic change, and the impact of that change on the natural environment. The concepts that have emerged from demography studies have made significant contributions to an understanding of social change. Demographic literature also covers topics such as human resources; health and morbidity; family systems and family structure; the role of women; the value of children; and the social, cultural and institutional context of demographic change.

Why understand demography?

Demography is an essential component of many activities around the world including social and market research, planning and administration and development. Demographics provide a picture of the changing character of a community. The City of Salina and other government agencies use demographics to determine what facilities and services are necessary to meet the current and future needs of the groups they serve. Also, corporations and institutions use demographics to make decisions on where to locate businesses and whether to expand existing services and facilities.

Census 2000 Demographics

The principle source of demographic information in the United States is the U.S. Bureau of the Census. Local sources provide specific information on growth and development activity in Salina to the Census Bureau. The Bureau then compiles the information and makes it available nationally. The U.S. Bureau of the Census has published the demographic results of the 2000 Census; the City of Salina’s demographic information includes the student populations (K-State Salina and Kansas Wesleyan University) and those employees of Saline County businesses and their families that reside inside the city limits of Salina.
