2011 CITY AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS
Patriot Award
In July 2011, Martha Tasker, the City of Salina's Utilities Director, was a recipient of a Patriot Award that is given out by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). This award is to recognize employers who support a strong National Guard and Reserve force. Employers qualify for recognition when they practice leadership and personnel policies that support employee participation in the Guard and Reserve. Ms. Tasker was nominated by Melissa Rose, Administrative Assistant III for the Utilities Department.
2010 Pinnacle Award
In November 2010, Salina was one of seven U.S. chapters and two state councils to win this national competition that is sponsored annually by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and ADP. This award was given for the creation of a public education seminar, "Coping with Community Tragedy - Workplace Violence." Unfortunately, this was in response to a fatal shooting at a business when an employee's ex-husband entered her workplace and fatally shot her, a co-worker, and himself in the community in October 2009. Natalie Fischer, Director of Human Resources for the City of Salina, noted that this tragedy occurred despite legal actions taken against the shooter and "created fear and vulnerability in many citizens, employees, and employers. Inquiries and phone calls from individuals concerned with workplace violence poured into the police station and seeking guidance on warning signs and prevention techniques.
