2009 CITY AWARDS & RECOGNITIONS
Governor's Arts Award
The City of Salina was the 2009 Governor's Arts Award winner for outstanding Arts Community as recognized by the Kansas Arts Commission. The first award in this category of recognition was given in 2008 to the City of Wichita. Governor Sebelius states "These awards call attention to the creative spirit that makes our state a great place to live, work and raise a family." The Governor's Arts Awards honor distinguished Kansas artist, patrons and educators and have been given annually since 1974 by the governor and the Kansas Arts Commission.
Tree City USA
For the 20th year in a row, the City of Salina was named Tree City USA in 2009. We are proud to be part of this prestigious national award. Trees in our City help clean the air, conserve soil and water, moderate temperature and bring nature into our daily lives. They are such a vital component of the infrastructure in our City and provide environmental and economical benefits. We recognize these benefits and provide needed car for our trees. This award is sponsored in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
Fire Chief of the Year Finalist
Larry Mullikin, Fire Chief of the Salina Fire Department, was a national finalist for Fire Chief of the Year sponsored by Fire Chief Magazine. Chief Mullikin was selected amongst 15 other finalist from across the United States.
Diversity and Inclusion Award
The City of Salina received a 2009 Diversity and Inclusion Award from the Salina Human Resource Management Association (SHRMA), an affiliate of Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) The award was received for the city's Affirmative Action Second Review process that provides a second review minority and female candidates, thus increasing the minority and female candidate interview opportunities. SHRMA recognized three Salina area employers that level at promoting diversity and inclusion in our community.
Municipal Concrete Award
The City of Salina was one of a number of cities selected for the 2009 Kansas Ready Mix Concrete Association Municipal Concrete Award for the South Ohio project.
Excellence in Public Works Field Supervision
Duane Zook, Street Superintendent for the Public Works Department, was the receipent of an award from the Kansas Chapter of American Public Works Association (APWA) for Excellence in Public Works Field Supervision. |
