Salina Human Relations Training Opportunities

Salina Human Relations: What We Do (1-3 hours)

 

This training provides information about the powers and duties of the Salina Human Relations Commission under Chapter 13 of the Salina city code, which include the ability to receive discrimination complaints and to subpoena witnesses and documents; the complaint process, including investigation, what “probable cause” means and how cases are evaluated; the determination of “disparate treatment” in employment cases; and unlawful housing practices.

 

Affirmative Action: Myth vs. Fact (30 min.-1 hour)

 

Seeks to dispel many of the misconceptions regarding Affirmative Action, such as: Affirmative Action means hiring quotas, it means less-qualified people will be hired, it is no longer needed, etc.

 

Sexual Harassment (2-4 hours)

 

This training provides a pre- and post-test for management personnel and covers topics such as quid pro quo, hostile environment, types of sexual harassment, methods for preventing it, costs associated with it, etc.

 

Fair Housing for High Schoolers (45-60 minutes)

 

Designed to be fun and engaging for high-school students, this training includes role-play skits put on by the kids themselves that spur discussion regarding housing issues, an exercise to help participants remember the protected classes under the Fair Housing Act and discussion designed to help prepare young people for their first rental experience.

 

Americans with Disabilities Act (Up to a full day)

 

Who is covered under the ADA, the definition of disability, an explanation of reasonable accommodation and compliance requirements are among the topics covered.

 

Cultural Awareness (30-60 minutes)

 

Participants are asked to take a “cultural awareness quiz,” which will help inform them about cultures outside the United States and spark discussion about those topics. An example of one of the multiple-choice questions: “Which two cultural groups tend to avoid direct eye contact when talking with authority figures as a show of respect?”
