Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill

The mission of the Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill is to provide refuse disposal and diversion of select materials for the citizens of Saline County in a safe and effective manner according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) regulations.

To accomplish these objectives, the Landfill has 9 authorized full-time employees and 2 part-time employees. The Landfill Superintendent and Landfill Supervisor maintain Manager of Landfill Operations certification.

General Information

The Landfill occupies a full section (656 acres), 289.69 of which are permitted by the KDHE for refuse disposal. The Landfill receives approximately 85,000 tons of refuse per year and has a life expectancy of 128 years. About 6,5000 tons per year come from Ellsworth, Lincoln and Ottawa Counties.

Location and Hours of Operation

The Landfill is located 3.5 miles west of I-135 at 4292 S. Burma Road. The hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The facility closes at 2 p.m. on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. The facility is closed Sundays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day.

In accordance with Municipal Code, Chapter 34, Article III (2): “Vehicles shall be provided with a means of covering the refuse to be hauled and of keeping such refuse securely within the hauling body.”

Disposal fees are based on the type and weight of materials brought to the Landfill. The minimum disposal fee at the City of Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Facility is $10.00 per vehicle fee for loads up to 660 lbs. Loads of 660 lbs. or above will be $32.34 per ton. There are separate fees for other materials such as tires, dirt, rock, concrete, asbestos, contaminated soil, etc. Please call (785) 826-7395 for specific rates not listed.

Yard Waste Site

The Landfill operates a yard waste disposal site for Saline County residents to bring their yard waste free of charge. Commercial haulers of yard waste will pay 50% of the current tipping fee, which at this time is $16.17 per ton. Residential or commercial customers with loads of yard waste mixed with refuse will pay $32.34 per ton.

Acceptable Materials: limbs, brush, logs, stumps

Unacceptable Materials: sod, dirt, rock, animal waste, lumber, food waste, refuse, grass, and leaves

Waste Tires

The Landfill charges a fee per tire for disposal. When bringing tires to the Landfill, customers should separate them from regular refuse. The tires will be stored on site and collected by a tire recycler.

Scrap Metal Recycling

Scrap metal, such as washers, dryers, hot water heaters, etc. are collected for recycling at the Landfill. Customers should separate their scrap metal from regular refuse. Customers must provide Freon removal certification for items such as refrigerators, freezers, A/C units, dehumidifiers, etc. The disposal fee is $32.34 per ton; $10.00 minimum per vehicle.
