| Salina Police Department Facilities History
In the spring of 1877, the city voted $3,500 in bonds for the purchase of land and the erection of a city building. This building was to house the city council room, the mayor’s office, the fire department, the police department, the courtroom and the jail. The building cost $3,904.90. It was located at 132 N. Santa Fe. The United States flag and the oath of allegiance was painted in the courtroom. This building served as City Hall until 1912 when all City departments moved to the new City Hall built at the southwest corner of 5th and Ash streets. In 1917 a new fire station was built at 149 N. Fifth, beside the City Building. The removal of the fire department from the City Building allowed for expansion of the Marshal’s office. In 1950, the fire department again moved to a new building at 222 W. Elm. The police department was again moved into the old fire station on 5th Street. The building was remodeled to serve the needs of the police, including jail cells. The department would stay in that building until 1969 when the current law enforcement center was built at 255 North Tenth Street.
