Danielle Lemon |
On August 20, 21 and 22, 2012, the Salina Police Department competed with the Salina Fire Department in the annual event, Battle of the Badges. This year, the Salina Fire Department suffered a resounding defeat by receiving only 192 votes compared to the Salina Police Department's 354. This victory was due in large part to the dedication of Lt. Wayne Pruitt, Officer Breanna Buechman and Officer Danielle Lemon. Lt. Pruitt helped organize the event, while Officers Lemon and Buechman were our ambassadors for one and three days, respectively. Thank you for your contribution on this worthwhile cause and for your professional representation of this department. |

Crystal Hornseth |
(Received from citizen) On Friday at approximately 9:00 p.m. I had an acute onset of severe depression requiring immediate medical attention. I was not in a good state of mind and was not entirely sure whether or not I wanted or needed any intervention. When this officer arrived at the hospital parking lot and approached me, just her tone and concern for my well being went above and beyond what I would have expected from a police officer which immediately made me decide that my best interest was everyone's concern. I would like to thank her and make it known that her handling of the situation made all the difference as at that place in time things could have gone either way. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your compassion and professionalism. |

John Krenowicz |
On 06/25/12, a burglary occurred at a local restaurant with an unidentified suspect. Officer Krenowicz took the report and viewed the security video that showed the suspect. Officer Krenowicz also found a small amount of blood at the scene and it was collected. On 06/30/12, Officer Krenowicz was on patrol when he observed a white male on a bicycle that matched the description of the burglary suspect. Officer Krenowicz lost sight of the suspect but with persistence located him again a short time later. Officer Krenowicz contacted the suspect and ID'd him. Officer Krenowicz photographed the suspect and suspicious injuries on the suspect's right hand were noted by the officer. Officer Krenowicz notified investigations about the suspect he contacted. On Officer Krenowicz's own initiative, he contacted the suspect on 07/01/12 and transported him to the Salina Police Dept. where he was interviewed by investigations. The suspect later confessed to the burglary. |

Chad McCary |
On May 17, 2012 Officer McCary stopped a vehicle for speeding, 42/30mph zone. Officer McCary cited the driver for speeding. The citizen, a former law enforcement officer contacted me later to tell me he had received a citation and wanted to compliment Officer McCary for his professionalism. The citizen commented that it was "nice to see that anymore." I told the citizen Officer McCary had been in law enforcement for twenty years. The citizen commented that Officer McCary was a "hell of a great guy" and further that he was representing the Salina Police Department very well. Officer McCary should be commended for his professionalism, to have someone who should be mad after receiving a citation turn around and have a positive impression is what every police officer should strive for. |

Amanda Londono |
Each year the Department participates in Project Salina, a charity fund-raiser. Different sections are responsible for different events. This year the Patrol Division had sloppy joes lunch and snacks at the back counter. Although the entire Patrol Division was responsible for the event, Officer Londono personally undertook the entire event. She solicited funds from other officers to purchase supplies, cooked the food, coordinated usage of equipment, brought in all of the food, and conducted the sale single-handedly. In another recent fund-raiser which generated money for the morale and retirement fund, Officer Londono personally conducted the sale of coffee mugs to department members. Thanks to her willingness to sacrifice personal time, personal money, and personal effort, Officer Londono has made a tremendous impact on the well-being not only of the department but on the community as a whole. |

Jeremy Watkins Randy Constantino Amanda Londono Valerie Feathers
|
On February 2/11/ 2012, Officer Constantino was dispatched to a local motel for a vehicle burglary. Upon arrival, the victim told him that he had followed a trail of glass from his vehicle to a nearby motel room. When the victim looked inside the open door, he could see some of his property. The occupants of the room quickly gathered the property and left in a vehicle, which he described to Officer Constantino. As Officer Constantino left the motel, he observed the vehicle drive by the south side of the motel.
Officer Constantino, Officer Londono and Officer Feathers stopped the vehicle and contacted the four subjects. The driver agreed to open the trunk of the vehicle where Officer Constantino recognized stolen property from a vehicle burglary that he had worked on 2/8/2012. All of the subjects and the vehicle were transported to the PD. Investigator Watkins was advised of the case and assisted in interviewing the subjects. With his assistance, four more cases were cleared, one being a residential burglary.
These officers should be commended for their outstanding work and efforts. |

Mike Starr |
On Jan 5, 2012, Mike Starr volunteered to clean all of the patrol cars parked out back. He vacuumed, washed, wiped, and generally spit-shined the interior of many patrol cars. When asked why he was going above and beyond his job to clean the cars, Mike replied that he knows we spend a good portion of our life behind the wheel and he wants to provide us with a clean office space. The cars really did look and smell much better after Mike cleaned them, making for a much more professional work environment. This is just a single example of the way Mike performs all of his duties, going well beyond what is required and doing the best he can no matter what the task at hand. |

Marvina Havighorst |
During the past several years the Salina Community has seen a substantial increase in the Hispanic residents. There are only a few officers who are fluent in Spanish, and they are not always available to interpret. It seems when the need arises, Marvina Havighorst is our resident interpreter. Marvina is always willing to assist officers whether it be for a criminal investigation or a general assist in helping our Hispanic citizens. When Marvina interprets, it is obvious the citizen communicates well with her, therefore making our job easier to assist them. Marvina should be commended for her assistance to the Salina Police Department and the citizens of our community. Thanks, Marvina! |

Randy Jennings |
On 12/19/2011 Officer Jennings investigated a theft of a mislaid wallet. The elderly victim’s credit card was later used at three Salina businesses. Officer Jennings diligently investigated the case and gathered video of the suspects, which was placed on YouYube. After receiving several tips, he generated a photo lineup and contacted witnesses who identified the suspects. He contacted the suspects and gained evidence from their statements. He then prepared a search warrant affidavit, which was granted by the judge. He and other officers searched the residence finding additional evidence. After leaving work he located the vehicle listed in the search warrant and found a receipt from one of the thefts. With his hard work and dedication to this case, a suspect will be charged with 1 count of theft of lost or mislaid property, two counts of theft, and two counts of unlawful use of a credit card. |

On December 3, 2011, these officers from the Salina Police Department participated in the annual Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign. Personnel volunteered their time to ring the Salvation Army bell at the Central Mall in order to receive donations for the needy in our community. This year our efforts brought in $288.15 in donations in 8 hours. Our personnel deserve a salute for giving back to the community and special recognition should go to MPO Plank for organizing this year’s event. |

Wayne Pruitt Arlene Frederiksen |
I would like to put Lt. Pruitt and Arlene Frederiksen in for a salute for their efforts in switching the Police Department, Records Bureau and all other departments over that use the AS400. The newest version of Mobile data and the new MSP system has taken approximately one year and hundreds of man hours of their time to be possible. The behind the scenes work that each has put in to make the new software possible has often gone unnoticed.
Arlene has been diligent in working with personnel to ensure that the software will work and has went above and beyond to make sure the programs move the department forward.
Lt. Pruitt, although having his normal supervisor responsibilities, has assisted many employees to ensure that the new software is understood and in working order. Both Wayne and Arlene have worked hard to make sure that employees were trained in the use of the newest software programs and continue to be available to help all who need them. |

Jeffrey Vaughan Gary Hanus |
From Oct 9, 2011 to Oct 14, 2011, Officer Vaughan and MPO Hanus attended the yearly canine certification sponsored by the Heart of America Police Dog Association (HAPDA) in Urbandale, Iowa. Both canine teams certified in both patrol operations and narcotic detection. A total of 22 canine teams from Kansas, Iowa and Missouri attended certification. The teams were separated into two groups for certification and each group had a judge assigned.
During the week of certification each judge selected one canine team out of their group to attempt a Master Track based on their performance during the tracking phase of certification. The Master Track covered numerous terrains, multiple turns and covered a distance of approximately 400 yards. Officer Vaughan and Canine Riddik were selected and successfully completed the track. Officer Vaughan received the Master Track Award from HAPDA.
After certification was completed, HAPDA had a competition for the top patrol dog and the top narcotic detection dog. The canine teams were presented with different scenarios in each category that tested the training and caliber of the team. Officer Vaughan and Canine Riddik took first place in the patrol dog competition.
I was contaced by SO Sheriff's Deputy Hughes, who is a board member for HAPDA, and he advised that both judges expressed how impressed they were with Officer Vaughan and Canine Riddik.
I think both MPO Hanus and Officer Vaughan deserve congratulations on making it through certification. I also feel Officer Vaughan deserves a "Salute" for his dedication to the Salina Police Department's Canine Unit. |

Ann Haden |
I tried to order a new cover for my ballistic vest. Employees told me I needed to provide them with the serial numbers from the panels before they could order the new cover. When I looked at the panels, the serial numbers had worn off. The merchant did not have the serial numbers on file. Ann was able to look back through the purchase orders and find the serial numbers for me. Because Ann was able to do the extra work and look through purchase orders that were over three years old, I was able to get the equipment I needed. I know she has done this type of research for other officers as well. Thank you. |

On 10022011, at 0231 hrs, a citizen called 911 while in the area of a business on south 9th. The citizen heard the sound of breaking glass and observed a suspect burglarizing the business. She called dispatch, who sent officers to the crime in progress with details of the citizen’s information. They provided information the suspect left the scene in a green car and was wearing camouflaged clothing. As officers moved to the crime scene, they met a vehicle in the area that began to make furtive movement. The vehicle was stopped and found to be driven by a subject who was wearing camouflaged clothing. A crow bar used in the burglary, and two chainsaws taken from the business were observed in the vehicle. The subject was arrested for DUI, Possession of Marijuana and Drug Paraphernalia and additionally charged with Burglary, Theft, and Damage to Property. These officers and dispatchers should be commended for their exemplary service and teamwork representing the Salina Police Department and the citizens of Salina! |

Randy Jennings |
On October 19th, 2011, 14 DVD movies, 17 Play Station games and 7 Wii games were stolen from a truck stop. MPO Jennings learned through his investigation of a possible suspect. MPO Jennings located video from the store and made photos of the subject. He checked at a pawnshop and found that the stolen items had been sold there. He showed the clerks and witnesses of the businesses photo line-ups that included a photo of the suspect in them. The suspect was identified as being the individual responsible for the thefts.
MPO Jennings attempted several times to contact the subject, to no avail. He conducted surveillance at subject’s house and eventually located him outside the residence. He attempted to make contact with the subject and he ran in to his house and was located hiding in a cabinet under the kitchen sink. Through his investigation, MPO Jennings found evidence of more victims and that the suspect's brother is also involved and the two are committing similar crimes at other locations. |
