  • Age:  21 years of age at time of appointment
  • Education:  High school diploma or GED (college preferred)
  • Vision:  No upper acuity limit with contact lenses; otherwise, 20/100 correctable to 20/20

    Salina Police Officers are provided with membership in the Kansas Peace Officers Association 
  • Lateral Transfers / Out of State  Lateral Transfers:
    We value your experience and will start you at a wage commensurate with your knowledge, skills and abilityOfficers who come to the SPD from other Kansas law enforcement agencies and are KLETC-certified are not normally required to attend the full 15 week field training program. Depending upon qualifications, these officers are allowed to attend an abbreviated version of the FTO program. Certified Law Enforcement Officers from other states may be allowed to attend the one week KLETC Reciprocity Class rather than the full academy. KLETC is charged with the responsibility of deciding whether an Officer certified out of state will be eligible to attend the reciprocity class.

Compensation:  Apprentice Police Officer: $16.76 per hour during the 29-week police academy and Field Training Officer program.

Police Officer:
Annual Pay Range $37,918 to $64,834

Overtime Pay:  Officers receive overtime pay at the rate of 1 1/2 times their base rate

Longevity Pay:  Officer receive $3.50 per month longevity pay after 5 years of service

Other Compensation:  Officers who qualify are eligible for extra compensation in the form of:

  • Shift Differential - $0.50 per hour
  • EMT Pay - $0.30 per hour
  • Bilingual Pay - $0.30 per hour

Uniforms and Equipment:  All uniforms and equipment are provided at no cost to the officer.

Uniform & Cleaning Allowances:  Officers receive an allowance of $350.00 per year for replacement and repair of uniforms, and $350 per year for cleaning of uniforms.

Body Armor:  Officers are provided with concealable body armor

Holidays:  12 holidays are recognized by the city for all employees

Sick Leave:  Officers are allotted one sick day per month which can be accrued without limit.  Upon separation, with 5 years of service and good standing, employees are paid for 1/3 of unused sick days accrued.

Wellness:  The department has a fully- equipped weight room and fitness facility.

Vacation: 

  • 1 - 4  years: 10 days
  • 5 - 9  years: 12 days
  • 10-19 years: 16 days
  • 20+ years:    20 days

Health, Prescription & Dental Insurance:  The city contracts with Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Kansas, Caremark, and Delta Dental.  Both individual and family rates are available and each requires a very reasonable employee contribution.

Life Insurance:  Paid by city, equal to officer's annual salary.  Spouse is also covered at $15,000; dependent children at $10,000.

Public Safety Officers Benefit Program:  The Federal Government provides all commissioned officers witih a financial benefit of over $283,000 for death or total disability sustained in the line of duty.

KPOA Insurance:  The Kansas Peace Officers Association provides a $500.00 death benefit for members.

Workmen's Compensation:  Covers all job-related injuries.

Federal Death Benefit:
  $303,064.

Officer's Education:  In addition to a comprehensive in-service training program, college tuition reimbursement is available so that officers may continue their formal education.

Retirement Plan:  Officers are covered by the Kansas Police & Fire Retirement Plan, and may retire at age 50 with 25 years of service, or at 55 with 20 years of service.  Disability and death benefits are also provided.  Retirement benefit is figured at 2.5% x final average salary x years of service.  Maximum benefit is 80% of final average salary.
