Fire Extinguisher Training

The Salina Fire Department currently offers fire extinguisher traininng.  There are many resources available for workplaces to assist in their employee training endeavors.  One great resource for materials is the OSHA website http://www.osha-safety-training.net/FIR/fire.html.  There are DVDs available for purchase, as well as power point presentations to use as a classroom guide/lesson plan.

Fire Safety in the Workplace

Presentations are available for businesses within the City of Salina regarding fire prevention, fire safety and evacuation procedures. Please contact us at 785-826-7340 , for additional information or to schedule presentations/training. A minimum of two weeks notice is required.

Fire Sprinkler Systems: Residential & Commercial

Home fire sprinklers save lives and protect property...the lives and property that you value most.

Myth:  "Water damage from a sprinkler system will be more extensive than fire damage."

Fact:  Water damage from a home sprinkler system will be much less severe than the damage caused by water from fire-fighting hose lines or smoke and fire damage if the fire goes unabated.  Property losses are 85% less in residences with fire sprinklers compared to those without sprinklers.  Quick response sprinklers release 13-24 gallons of water per minute compared to 250 gallons per minute released by a fire hose.

Myth: "When a fire occurs, every sprinkler head goes off."

Fact:  Sprinkler heads are individually activated by heat.  Residential fires are usually controlled with one operating sprinkler head.  90% of all commercial fires are controlled with six or fewer heads.

Myth: "A smoke detector is enough protection."

Fact:  Smoke detectors can save lives by providing a warning system but can do nothing to extinguish a fire or protect those physically unable to escape on their own, such as the elderly or small children.  Though nearly 90% of U.S. homes have at least one smoke detector, only 60% have working detectors, often because of dead or missing batteries.

Myth: "Sprinklers are designed to protect property, but are not effective for life safety."

Fact:  Residential sprinklers provide a high level of life safety.  Statistics demonstrate that there has never been any multiple loss of life in a completely sprinklered public assembly, education, institutional, or residential building where the system was properly operating.  The combination of automatic sprinklers and early warning systems in all buildings and residences could reduce overall injuries, loss of life and property damage by at least 50%.

Senior Citizen Fire Safety

Presentations on fire safety are available for Senior Citizens groups. Topics include fire prevention, fall prevention, fire and life safety for the disabled and utilizing NFPA's Remembering When program. Please click the Senior Fire Safety tab in the column to the left for additional information.  If you have questions, or wish to schedule a program for your group or organization, or a home visit for a safety review, please contact the Fire and Life Safety Division at 785-826-7340. A minimum of two weeks notice is requested.

Fire Station Tours and Presentations

Tours of Salina fire stations are available by contacting the Fire and Life Safety Division 785-826-7340.  A minimum of two weeks notice is required.

It is requested that there be at least one adult for every four children present at the tour.  Although the tour is being conducted, the Firefighters will still be in service and subject to leaving for emergency response calls.  Should this happen during your tour it will be necessary for all visitors to vacate the fire station.  Your tour may be rescheduled by contacting the Fire and Life Safety Division.
